The Dallas Rowing Club Juniors have built a regional and national reputation for creating champions at the highest level of our sport. We attract athletes who play to win and for whom winning is still play. We accept athletes from private schools, public schools, and home schools from throughout the metroplex.
The DRC Juniors are amongst the most decorated Junior crews in the state of Texas. We consistently represent our region at the USRowing Youth National Championships and have taken home 5 medals and counting!
In addition to success on our team, many of our athletes have gone on to row at the collegiate level. Every year, our athletes are recruited by top colleges and many earn full scholarships.
No Cuts, No Tryouts
We do not make cuts, and there are no try-outs. Still, athletes are expected to work at the highest levels of cardio and anaerobic thresholds. We accept all who accept us because of our core philosophy that everyone matters.
The cost of participation is $140 per semester in addition to fees for regatta participation and travel.
We are sensitive to the costs associated with any sport and work to minimize unnecessary burdens on the parents. If a family demonstrates financial need for a talented and willing athlete, special accommodations will be available to assist. Our Club is a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. The Club and coaches ensure that no child will be turned away from our sport because of money.
Our coaches do not accept any salary. They are all educated professionals outside of the sport and are committed to passing on their competitive experience to the next generation. Our coaching further forms from within. Those who have competed for the Dallas Rowing Club return to pass on our core philosophies and training.

Sculling versus Sweep
The Dallas Rowing Club Juniors concentrate specifically on sculling, although we include some sweep skills training. Experience has taught that although many programs do run successful and safe sweep programs, the asymmetrical muscle development associated with sweep rowing is not worth the risk to developing bodies.
Additionally, college coaches consistently and specifically seek out our high school scullers because they have a much better sense of boat balance and have not developed bad habits or injuries that college coaches must spend hundreds of hours to fix or accommodate.
Practice times will be Monday through Thursday, 5:30 p.m. through approximately 7:00-7:30 p.m., and Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. through approximately 11:00 a.m. Second session will follow breakfast and end approximately 1:30-2 P.M. The athletes will start off slow with shorter workouts to get them acclimated to the physical demands of the training program. Practices will be subject to change at the coaches’ discretion. Notice of any changes will be provided to the team.
Clothing and Equipment
Please make sure your athlete brings the following:
- medium size towel
- running shoes
- non-greasy sweat-proof sunscreen
- light breathable clothing
- a reusable water bottle with their name written on it (please no disposable water bottles)
When on the water, please add to your child's kit a change of clothes. Rowing is a water sport, after all, so it is common to come off the water dripping wet.
Our free beginner-intermediate rowing clinic in the summer is typically a great success drawing approximately 10-20 ambitious young athletes. For safety reasons, we do not allow athletes to start with our program until the summer before their 8th grade year. During the competitive season we restrict the 8th graders to limited participation, progressing until high school (depending on abilities and development) when they are generally unrestricted.
